TALES OF PURE GRENADA
Grenada was formed as an a result of an underwater volcano.
Before the arrival of Europeans, Grenada was inhabited by Caribs (indigenous people). Christopher Columbus sighted Grenada in 1498 during his third voyage to the new world. He named the island "ConcepciĆ³n." The origin of the name "Grenada" is obscure, but it is likely that Spanish sailors renamed the island for the city of Granada. By the beginning of the 18th century, the name "Grenada", or "la Grenade" in French, was in common use. Partly because of the Caribs, Grenada remained colonized for more than one hundred years after its discovery.
During the 17 to 18th century the island was captured and recaptured, colonized and recolonized by the French and British (who had the final control of the island.)
Today influences of all European colonizers can be found n the island such as tails of the blood sucking soucuyant or the names of places around the island. Feel free to ask a local of their rich history when visiting the island , they would gladly share.
